Gary War

New York based lo-fi-chop-pop outfit Gary War are back in Cambridge! After last year’s highly anticipated “Horribles Parade” LP that was all about deeply stacked sketches of psychedelia hiding under waves of fuzz, their new material is much more “hi-fi”, feeling like an outer space perspective on 80es synth pop. Less fuzz, more fizz, they have maintained the complex layered arrangements, all simultaneously fighting for your attention, that give this band such a unique sound. Yep. We like!

http://www.myspace.com/garywargarywar

Temperatures

Temperatues are a duo from London. Situated somewhere between hardcore and noise, they play fuzzy and fast-paced meditations of distorted bass, vintage synth and submerged vocals layered around relentless drumming that is sometimes more reminiscent of free jazz than noise. Refreshingly purist and non-formulaic.

http://www.myspace.com/temperaturestheband

Kelvox 1

Kelvox 1 are a Cambridge-based and quite difficult to place into a genre. Post-everything, their sound brings to mind instrumental dubstep visionaries Mount Kimbie, as well as the dark, expansive spaces created by the likes of Zola Jesus.

Lovely free EP here:

MARK TEMPLETON

Coming in to Cambridge all the way from Alberta, Canada, Mark Templeton is a master of electro-acoustic composition, fusing electronic drones and artificial soundscapes with organic textures from a variety of so-called “traditional” instruments: guitar, banjo, accordion. Not that any of that technical stuff really matters, when what you’re listening to are some of the most intricate and interesting compositions going.

It’s the sound of a crisp Alberta morning; nice and sunny but with a chill in the air. Washes of sound both surrounding and enveloping you, jump-cuts to different scenes, gone as quick as they arrive. It’s going to be a pleasant time.

www.myspace.com/marktempleton

soundcloud.com/fieldsawake

GLOCKENSPIEL

Using tapes loops and effects-a-plenty, Glockenspiel craft a half-drone, half-krautrock sculpture of sound, insistent beats occasionally poking through the haze. Think like a more blissed-out Hangedup.

www.myspace.com/glockandspiel

GRIEF ATHLETES

Buzzing, hissing, droning, scraping, bending, scratching, washing, drying. Stealth brutality.

Fourcolor (12k/apestaartje/cubic music)

Fourcolor is the solo project of Tokyo’s Keiichi Sugimoto. Other than being involved in the groups Fonica and Minamo
(who released a wonderful album on 12k earlier this year) he is also the head of Cubic Music housing a variety of Japanese
experimental music and design projects. Expect bright and glowing laptop electronica, sketching finely-structured shapes and patterns into a lush backdrop
of resonating harmonies.

Hervé Boghossian (List / raster-noton)

Hervé Boghossian works with electric and acoustic guitar as well as electronics. He will be performing his solo project “Satellite”, tiptoeing around digital saturation and distortion of guitar-based sounds. Herve runs the electronic/acoustic minimalist music label List and has been released by the prestigious raster-noton amongst others.

Simon Scott (Miasmah)

Cambridge-based Simon Scott and owner of experimental label Kesh has had a productive year already, having released a beautiful mini-CDR for Secret Furry Hole and a new LP, “Traba” to be released on Immune on the 15th of June as well as touring across the UK, playing with Tim Hecker, Nils Frahm, Machinefabriek and Svarte Greiner and others. His layers of guitar, field recordings and electronics explore vast spaces full of contemplative beauty and will provide a lovely round up to this evening’s line-up.

golden diskó ship

golden diskó ship is Theresa Stroetges is a one girl band from Berlin.
Her music is a journey through exciting sonic landscapes that appear to be sampled with heart and ear irrespective of the medium used and traverse pretty much everything from a viola to sticky tape and a pigeon.
Pleasingly erratically layered around meekishly sung elements of folk music, she creates beautifully floating songs navigating past musical stereotypes.

Ahoy!

CJ Boyd

CJ Boyd is a solo-bassist from Chicago creating melancholic meanderings of melodic exploration winding and turning around minimalist bass loops. Heavy and full of emotion, this sounds like a rainy morning and a sunny afternoon at the same time.

Svarte Greiner / Miasmah, Type

Svarte Greiner is the one man project of Erik K. Skodvin (one half of the duo Deaf Center and the man behind the Miasmah label).

While the duo create dusty grey soundscapes in a surrealistic world of sounds not far from that of David Lynch/Angelo Badalamenti, Svarte Greiner is further exploration into a darker, more mysterious and disturbed universe. Drawing inspirations from artists such as Earth, Volcano The Bear, David Darling & Deathprod, the output is draped in lynchian mysticism and horror film cinematics.

Since his release of the debut album “knive” in 2006, he has released a series of 12″´s, cassettes and limited edition releases around, before the followup “kappe” came out in February 2009. Spring 2010 sees a new LP on digitalis, based around the earlier cassette release “Penpals Forver”, a split LP with Xela and Keith Fullerton Whiteman and some hidden 7″ releases. Erik also toured with Fever Ray as opening act during their first ever tour in 2009. (Sleepsound Agency)

Simon Scott / Miasmah

Best known for being the drummer of the iconic Slowdive during the early nineties Simon Scott has been a prolific contributer to music over the past 20 years. Amongst numerous other projects, he has been involved in founding the bands Televise and Seavault and conrtibuted to the Seattle-based The Sight Below as well as set up his own experimental electronic label Keshhhhh.

Navigare, Simon’s solo debut released on Erik Skodvin’s Miasmah last year, is full of processed instruments, old tape samples and field recordings, creating wonderful drone-soaked soundscapes and incredible textures with a subtly melodic undertone.

“Scott is particularly adept at layering coolly shimmering guitars and dark churning currents of noise into something vast”. “A haunting aspect of ‘Navigare’ is how it seems to contain traces of tunes that stand out like half-forgotten relics of the past” (The Wire, Dec 2009)

Mandelbrot / Highpoint Lowlife

Mandelbrot is the solo project of Keung from Mandelbrot Set and focuses more on the experimental side of guitar manipulation, utilizing the effects pedals and samplers to a much greater degree and truly creating some mind-bending sounds. From a melodic base, the sound evolves in many directions, from digital crackle to white noise, from ebowed drones to subsonic lowends.

For musical sign-posts, think the musical crossroads of Aerial M, Spacemen3, and SunnO))) – HPLL

Library Tapes

Library Tapes is the nom de plume of David Wenngren, resident of Sweden’s Steel City, Eskilstuna. In contrast with the heavy industry of his home town, the sound of Library Tapes is always beautiful, subtle and affecting, somewhere between classical, ambient and experimental. Primarily based around piano and field recordings, more recent works have expanded to the use of strings and other instruments, in collaboration with Peter Broderick, Sylvain Chauveau, Danny Norbury and others. His moving precise and melancholic works bring to mind modern classical composers such as Max Richter and Jóhann Jóhannsson as well as sound manipulators such as Jasper TX and Tim Hecker.

Woodchucker is Jonatan Nästesjö from the Swedish town of Jönköping. Inspired by the forests of his homeland, he creates slow-moving electro-acoustic atmospheria with piano/string loops played in old cassette players, and the sounds from beneath the ground.

Grouper

Portland based Liz Harris creates murky vocal based songs that drift between dream like psychedelic pop and near ambiance. Her hauntingly serene album ‘Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill’ was met with widespread critical praise and became the soundtrack to our Winter.

This year Grouper played ATP, toured with Animal Collective and currently is touring Europe – We’re excited to have such an inspiring artist play Cambridge this Autumn.

Listen to Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill here;

http://typerecords.com/releases/dragging-a-dead-deer-up-a-hill

with the wonderful Rozi Plain

Rozi plays wonderful, intimate pop songs full of melody and charm. We’re immeasurably pleased to announce that Rozi will be playing a special solo set. Her debut record “Inside Over Here” is out now on Fence Records (Home to King Creosote and The Pictish Trail).

“Put this to your ear: you can hear the sea. The creels and gulls and taverns and harbours and coasts and aloneness that define the maritime: it’s all here, quietly, made musical. Unhurried, understated, and ace. ” PLAN B

and Hywel Payne

After a short stint as a foley artist for the Archers, Hywel refocused his attention to field recordings and electronic wizardry.
